On February 13, 2022, the law that regulates single-use plastic came into force in Chile, a law that was born after a study conducted by two of our allies: Oceana and Plastic Oceans Chile. study carried out by two of our allies: Oceana and Plastic Oceans Chile..

To understand its implications and the challenges it poses, we spoke with Mark Mineboo, Regional Director (for Latin America) of Plastic Oceans. We leave here a summary of our conversation, if you want to review the full interview, we invite you to visit our youtube channel.

"We are all in a hurry, running from home on the way to the company, to the office and on the way we quickly buy a coffee. Why can't we change that and get up 10 minutes earlier to have a coffee calmly? Read the newspaper before running.

"These are changes in habits that go beyond changing a disposable for another disposable, it is a change in the home (...) and on the other hand, also make the request to companies to understand the objective of this law, to seek alternatives and collaborate, to organize with others in their field to buy supplies together".

"We have seen several interesting legislations in Colombia and Peru, also on plastic issues and globally, Chile is at the forefront with this law . There are few examples of countries regulating these types of plastics, apart from the European Union, which was looking at it at the same time as Chile. But as a continent we are moving very fast. thanks to the circular economy, national strategies, roadmaps.

"In addition, the inclusion of grassroots recyclers is something that I have seen several countries in Latin America put on the global agenda, because they are key to system change."

"If we really want to make an impact, we have to consume less, we have to consume intelligently, we have to consume good quality products. In Latin America we still have the opportunity, we have an ancestral culture that can teach us to coexist with our environment, to take care of it. We have to listen to our grandparents who lived in a world without plastic, in a world without disposable products.

"We don't have to look so much to other countries; we have to look to our own family, to the other generations that can tell us how they lived and lived happily without throwing everything away. That's where we have to look, learn and hopefully generate changes in learning".
